Our History

We have come a long way but there is still a long way to go

The Epworth Centre is a multi-use, community hub and arts space. It was originally built as a Methodist Chapel and Sunday School in 1798, and is a Cornish traditional granite faced building. The Chapel was used for the local mining community and the market town of Helston.

Our programme is diverse, from International Guitar Festivals to Cornish celebrations promoting intangible Cultural Heritage, from martial arts to local dance productions. We are home to four non-professional, community led theatre companies: Helston Theatre Company, Thursday Night Theatre, LAMB Theatre Company and ACT 1 Youth Theatre, as well as being the Dojo for Helston Judo Group.

We have partnerships across Helston including CAST and the Museum of Cornish Life. We have also been fortunate enough to work with The Hall for Cornwall.

The Epworth Centre has around 1300 users and participants each year through the above programme of self-organised community activities such as rehearsals and practices. An additional 6000+ people are welcomed to the Centre as audience members.

Since 2019 We have worked hard to improve our facilities and make our spaces suitable to be available to as many people in the community as possible. The gallery below shows just some of the renovation work that has taken place in the last few years.
